If you’re into nostalgia, you may want to drop by Tiong Bahru to check out these lovely murals by Yip Yew Chong. There are three in total and are aptly entitled “Pasar & Fortune Teller”, “Home”, and “Bird Corner”.
This “Pasar” mural is located at 73 Eng Watt Street. The fortune teller pictured below actually sat outside the Tiong Bahru market up to around 2003 before the old market was demolished. Unfortunately, he passed away several years ago and is unable to see himself immortalised in this mural.
My favourite of the three is this one entitled “Home”, located at 74 Tiong Poh Road. It paints a picture of a typical home back in the day, including the rattan chair, old-school telephone, coffee flask, family portrait, and even Ah Pui and Ah San on TV! Very much like my grandparents house back in the 80’s.
Last but not least, the “Bird Corner” mural is located at 69 Sengkang Poh Road. Oh did you know that all his murals have a cat in it? In this one, a cat looks longingly at the bird above its head.
