Bintan – Ocean Bay Resort

Bintan Island or Negeri Segantang Lada is an island of 1,866 square kilometers, and is part of the Riau Islands province of Indonesia. The capital of Bintan is the southwestern city of Tanjung Pinang and is only a 90 minute ferry ride from the Singapore Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal.

Built off the white sandy beaches of Bintan Island, Ocean Bay Resort is a tropical fishing resort comprising 33 units of both beach front and sea chalets. We paid approx $150 per person for 3 days 2 nights stay at the resort which included 3 meals a day and ad-hoc island trips. Ferry tickets are $45 for a return trip.

Day One

Goodbye Singapore – leaving from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal…

we arrived in Tanjung Pinang Ferry Terminal and was greeted by Tracy the resort manager who promptly drove us to the “kelong”, showed us our rooms and prepared lunch for us.

Some shots of the resort…

Lunch was a sumptious meal comprising of deep-fried sotong, steamed flower crabs, stir-fried kang kong, seafood soup, and honeydew.

Then it was a trip to the opposite island which had a white sandy beach and crystal clear waters. They did mention that we could do some snorkelling, but there were no fish and most of the corals are dead. So, we chose to just play in the water and get a tan.

In the evening, we tried our hand at carrom and had a game of 8-ball pool…

For dinner, we were served with fried rice and an assortment of barbecue chicken wings, sotong, prawns, fish, sweet potatos, sweet corn, and Otak-otak. For desert, we had papayas.

At night, we enjoyed an hour long Tropikal Body Massage, a combination of aromatherapy and Balinese massage with essential oils, at the Tropikal Spa for just $39 per person. Very relaxing indeed!

Day Two

Day two started breakfast of fried noodles and rice, toast, with coffee and tea.

Followed by a day of fishing in the crystal clear water “sea pond”. Our fishing assistant who help with the hooks and baits…

Bait – smelly and very dead sotong

Even the bees came to feast :)

We stopped for lunch which consisted of fish steamboat, stir fried veggies, deep-fried oatmeal prawns, gong gong, and pineapples.

Then it was back to fishing again… I had double catches twice! We caught about 20 fish but released most of them into the sea.

However, we did keep five of the larger ones and had the restaurant steam them.

In the evening, we took a walk along the shore, where the locals lived.

Chickens kept by the local…

And enjoyed the beautiful sunset…

For dinner, we had steamed local scallops, stir-fried veggies, pepper crab, seafood soup, and oranges for desert. Absolutly delicious! :)

The day ended with beer and watching Surfs Up by the sea…

Day Three

The day started off with freid beehoon for breakfast…

Afterwhich, we and a touch and feel session with the marine life.

Then, just lazing around all morning…

check out these fungi – does it look like an old man?

Followed by lunch of seafood omelette hotplate, deep-fried fish slices, stir-fried bean sprouts, asparagus soup, and apples.

In the afternoon, we did a little shopping in Tanjung Pinang…

Then it’s goodbye Bintan! :)
