Somerset – Cheddar Gorge & Wookey Hole

Cheddar Gorge and Caves
Cheddar Gorge is the largest gorge in the United Kingdom near the village of Cheddar in the Mendip Hills in Somerset, England. The gorge is the site of the Cheddar Caves, where Britain’s oldest complete human skeleton, Cheddar Man, estimated to be 9,000 years old, was found in 1903. The caves, produced by the activity of an underground river, contain stalactites and stalagmites.

The town is absolutely beautiful…

And it’s also the home of cheddar cheese! :)

Cheddar man – sole survivor

This particular stalagmite is called the St. Pauls…

Cheddar cheese in the making – caves are 11 degrees celcius, perfect for cheese

Jacobs Ladder & Tower
Jacobs Ladder with its 274 steps takes visitors on a journey through the ice ages from the bottom of Britain’s biggest gorge to the top where Pavey’s Lookout Tower gives wonderful views across to Exmoor and the Mendip Hills, Somerset Levels and Glastonbury Tor.

At the top of Jacobs Ladder…

And the the top of the tower…

The view from the top of the tower…

Then it’s back down the 274 steps!

Wookey Hole
Wookey Hole is a village close to Wells in Somerset, England. It is within the parish of St Cuthbert Out. The name Wookey is thought to come from the Old English wocig (an animal trap). The village of Wookey Hole is dominated by the Wookey Hole Caves tourist site which has show caves, a paper mill and a museum.

Inside the caves – the stalactites, stalagmites, and colourful lighting is amazing
