Phillip Island – The Giant Worm & Penguin Parade

We visited “The Giant Worm” on our way to Phillip Island. This tacky tourist feature celebrates the unique giant worms of the area, which grow up to three metres long and 3 cm thick. The edifice itself is a huge concrete monster snaking across a paddock, with a museum and gift shop built inside. Out the back is an animal park featuring a koala and kangaroo farm but we also saw wombats, dingos, kangaroos, and emus there.

Next stop was Cowrie Beach, also enroute to Phillip Island.

We finally reached Phillip Island for the world famous penguin parade. It’s Australia’s most popular natural wildlife attraction and winner of the Victorian Tourism Awards for Ecotourism. Each night at sunset, the world’s smallest penguins, the Little Penguins, emerge from the sea and waddle ashore to their sand dune burrows after a day’s fishing at sea. A truly memorable experience!

Penguins coming onto shore…

This is one of a three part entry of our trip to Victoria, Australia. Other places we visited on this trip are Great Ocean Road and Melbourne City.
